STORYTELLING and TRANSFORMATION

In the animation industry, it is fair to say we are all born storytellers, whether visual storytellers or wordsmiths!

As a published author and writer/director for live-action film, Dominick Domingo largely draws on his years as a Disney Feature Animation artist for his understanding of the Western Storytelling convention that informs both narrative fiction and screenwriting. Having crossed both format and genre, Dominick is well versed in the nuances of each—the trappings and demands of writing for theater versus film, or film versus literature. In this lecture (with Q and A to follow) Dominick will discuss what it is to be a storyteller, to become a master of speaking to the head, the gut or the heartstrings, of distinguishing between the universal and the culturally relative or subjective. From verbal tradition around the campfire, through the Greek tragedies and Shakespeare to the latest effects-driven blockbuster, the drive to weave narratives is innate in humanity; Dominick will delve into not just the nuts and bolts of structure, but why we inherently transform through conflict resolution, individually and culturally. Together we will explore why narrative is more effective than persuasion in the didactic realm—in Dominick’s view, we only change minds by touching hearts!
